Annette Harms grew up on a beef and maize farm at Nthabamhlope in South Africa. Her mom is very, very German, fresh breeding stock from Berlin and her dad is second generation German, both linked to the Hermannsburg Mission Society, founded by Annette’s great great great uncle.
All the Harms kids attended a ghastly junior school and a fabulous High School, Hermannsburg.
After matric in 1989, Annette did a BA at Stellenbosch Uni, not knowing what she wanted to become (she still doesn’t) and then her Honours in German at the UKZN. Then came a business diploma.
In 2005 Annette was blessed with the biggest gift of her life – a Rotary GSE trip to Australia. In February 2006 she was inducted into the Rotary Club of Pmb East.
In April 2007 Annette married Jan, the perfect man and now has two gorgeous stepsons, Alex and Daniel, a precious, fat cat called Lucy Sullivan and a magnificent Rottie pup named Max. She lives with her family in Pietermaritzburg.
In 2006 Annette underwent her second big back operation which was moderately successful. When she doesn’t have backache Annette likes to write columns, which are occasionally published and work on an MA thesis, which she hopes to finish before the next millennium.
